Attabad Lake Hunza
Attabad Lake is a glorious place to see and enjoy located in the Gojal region. It is situated at a distance of about half an hour east of Karimabad which is the capital of the Hunza district of Gilgit-Baltistan region. The lake was formed as a result of a great landslide in the Attabad Hunza valley of Gilgit-Baltistan. This lake reminds us that a big tragedy can result in amazing beauty. The massive landslide in January 2010 blocked the flow of the Hunza river and displaced thousands of people.
Attabad Lake Depth & Creation
The landslide blocked the Hunza river for around five months and gave birth to a new lake altogether. The water level in the naturally created dam rose to a depth of over 300 feet resulting in the formation of the natural lake with a length of around 13 miles. According to the news reports, this massive flooding resulted in the death of 20 people beneath the landslide and displaced around 6,000 people. It also blocked the Karakoram Highway which led to a shortage of food in the village as well. Over 170 houses and 120 shops in the subdivision Gojal was affected by the landslide.

Other than Attabad some other villages were also got affected badly by the landslide including Ainabad Shishkat, Gulmit, and Gulmin. The lake has now become one of the most famous tourist attractions in the Gilgit-Baltistan region. Thousands of people per year come here to spend their holidays and enjoy the vacation with natural beauties.

The distance between the capital city Islamabad to Attabad lake is around 599 kilometers. The travel time through flight to reach the destination is around 55 minutes. However, it can take around 10 to 11 hours to travel by-road from Islamabad to Attabad lake.
